We start 2016 with lot’s of hope and anticipation for the good times ahead and even though it may take some months before we feel that this really is a trend in the right direction. By years end we might find ourselves living in a different reality to the one we’ve just left behind. 2016 is a year when the recent challenging cycles of the last ten years show us how they have prepared the way for our next phase of development. This year is likely to be a “game changer” and now each one of us has to choose how we are going to play it. Read the Full 2016 Forecast
During early December as the Sun approaches the Solstice, it’s nearly midwinter for us in the northern hemisphere and a perfect opportunity to view the pre-dawn sky, particularly if you’re not a naturally early riser! The late sunrise and clear cold skies will give a chance to see the waning crescent Moon drop a little further each day, past the bright planets, Jupiter, then Mars and finally Venus before it joins with the Sun at the New Moon phase. Saturn, rising just ahead of the Sun is so close now it’s not visible. Taking some quiet time to star gaze can really help to put things into perspective. This is especially so when there’s such demand for our attention now with the short days, busy pre Christmas preparations and world news broadcasts creating fear and stress as we imagine the worst.
With the current astrological “weather” it is even more important to keep a check on what we focus on. Become aware of how much mental and emotional energy is given to worry, anxiety, fear and a sense of helplessness. Take advantage of the astrological climate to change those thoughts into something more positive and empowering now. The challenging aspect between Saturn and Neptune began to make its self known in mid November and will continue in the background throughout the next year. The shifts and changes seem to be intensified and there can be a growing sense of unreality. Bombarded with too much information, the world around us can seem quite surreal. Keeping a grip on reality is the personal challenge.
It will become increasingly apparent that so much in our world is actually no more than a creation of imagination or ideas that are believed to be true, or just something that everyone agrees with and never paused to question. Taking “time to stand and stare” or pause and reflect quietly has become a lost art for many, but it is an essential practice during the coming weeks and months. The New Moon on the 11th is in Sagittarius and in a natural placement to begin a sincere quest for truth.
Over the whole New Moon phase and into the next weeks the effect of Mars in opposition to Uranus will be apparent. There may be struggles or argument as the forceful will of Mars is in direct conflict with the unpredictable nature of Uranus. This is certainly a time when a sudden change of direction or purpose is likely. It can have a very positive effect, once things have settled. When two high energy planets clash like this it can be disruptive and seem to happen beyond any individual control. It may create chaos as the old goal or objective is blown out, in favour of new, more liberal ideals. Self-centred or self serving desires of an individual or group can be overridden by a “live and let live” attitude but there is likely to be some shocking news, incident or revelation that forces a change in perspective first.
Also on the same day, we have Venus in Scorpio in a supportive trine aspect with Neptune in Pisces. This highlights the things that are important, going deeply into things, what we value in life and what higher ideals we have. It supports compassion, inclusion and love regardless of differences and despite social taboo. Start looking out beyond what’s immediately apparent and seek new dreams, ideas or beliefs. Read uplifting words. Research new facts rather than automatically accept what is simply repetition. Think up your next question instead of responding with the ready answer. These options are ways to antidote some of the more challenging aspects involving Mars and Uranus and to ensure the balance is tipped towards a positive experience for the Solstice and Full Moon Midwinter festivities.
The December New Moon is at 20° Sagittarius on the 11th at 10:31am. The Full Moon is at 4° Cancer on the 25th at 11:11am. (UT)

A breakdown, breakthrough or break out! With a potential for release of tension & necessary discharge of emotional energy this Lunar eclipse is an opportunity for another major step in our important relationships & self development.
After last month’s peak in astrological excitement April is going to seem quite unremarkable by comparison. We do though have some planetary events that hold great potential for really working with, and moving on from, what was brought out in these recent weeks.
The month opens with a fire trine aspect between the Sun in Aries and Jupiter in Leo on 2nd. This is a powerful “up beat” energy boost from two planets that bring a positive energetic vibe working together to bring out the best of their respective traits. Use this as an opportunity for creative expansion, exciting adventure or the inspiration to embark on a new enterprise.
On the 4th we have this months headline event – a total lunar eclipse! Although not visible in Europe we can still experience the astrological effects. At every Full Moon the Sun is on one side of the earth and casts it’s light onto the face of the Moon on the opposite side of the earth. When the earth is in exact alignment in the middle (twice each year) it’s shadow obscures the Moon for about 2 hours, hence the eclipse.
As the Moon reaches it’s culminating phase at Full so we can expect the fulfilment of whatever was in focus at the last New Moon (the solar eclipse of March) and being a lunar eclipse this is a time of great release. If you sensed the tension that built up during last month as Uranus and Pluto reached their final exact square and then felt some relief after the Solar eclipse you might recognise some of that same energy being expressed again in early April. Both the Sun and Moon align with Uranus and Pluto within orb of the lunar eclipse degree.
Our intentions, aims and personal will was aligned during last months solar eclipse and now we can clear away remaining emotional blockages, fears or inhibitions that prevent us moving more fully in to the new possibilities. Just a couple of hours after the lunar eclipse the Moon will be square to Pluto which can dredge up old fear feelings or deep seated issues that have been unconsciously inhibiting our responses. The Moon is then opposite Uranus just four hours after the eclipse which could bring a sudden emotional discharge, unexpected breakthrough – or a break away!
As the Sun connects with Pluto on the 5th and then Uranus on the 6th the solar energy of self determination gets another stimulating kick towards the, recently revealed, new version of yourself. The next planet to get involved in this game (on the 8th) is Mercury, who represents our thinking process, communications and way of exchanging ideas and information. This could bring about a revolutionary shift or change in what you think, or say, and even how you express your innermost or secret thoughts.
The overall effect of this dynamic pattern around the lunar eclipse could produce a powerful emotional release. If you’re ready, and welcoming the current changes, it can be an exciting step forward. If however you’re resistant to upheaval in your personal life it could mean a rough ride for a couple of weeks. This phase is a further shedding of old patterns or reactions and a time to let go of the past. Anything that we cling to as familiar or that gives us a sense of security or well being but is actually more of a limitation than a comfort needs to be discarded. As the big “feel good” future orientated planet, Jupiter ends its retrograde phase to move forward once more, also on the 8th, we can really get a stronger sense of the new and very inviting horizon that’s coming into view.
Observing the Sun’s path as it moves through our skies is an ancient occupation which connects us to fellow beings who lived in our distant past. Stone alignments and monuments throughout the world were positioned to calculate these important celestial movements. The changing seasons of the Solar year form the basis of our tropical zodiac, used in what we call “western” astrology. The Sun’s movements are tracked as it crosses the equator to reach the tropic of Cancer at it’s most northerly and the tropic of Capricorn at the most southerly point. These crossings provide us with the cardinal points and four cardinal Zodiac signs. In December we’re on the countdown to the Winter Solstice, when the Sun will have reached it’s most southerly position, poised to begin it’s return journey north. Here in the northern hemisphere the days begin to lengthen once again and we take time out of daily routines to celebrate and enjoy traditional midwinter festivals.
The first week of December brings a Full Moon in Mercury ruled Gemini. The Sun is currently in Sagittarius with Mercury close by but hidden in it’s light. The pair make a comfortable trine aspect with unpredictable Uranus which adds to the hectic feel of this Moon phase. Most likely it will give a sense of restlessness or scattered energy for a few days. This is a fast paced time of making connections, getting in touch with friends and neighbours, sending out all kinds of communications and of course, another Mercury ruled activity, shopping!
The major astrological events this month include the close connection of Uranus and Pluto in the difficult square angle that has been around, on and off, since 2012. Now they will travel within “orb” of each other until finally parting company in late March. This is a grand finale for the energy that has brought us revolution and regime change. Tensions will be high during these months but there are other supportive and constructive planetary alignments beginning to step in now as we finish this unsettling phase in our evolution.
After 26 years, slow Saturn is about to take another turn in Sagittarius beginning on 23rd December. This will bring a very different and more positive way to experience the lessons that the “Lord of Time” provides. Since October 2012 Saturn has been in Scorpio, a sign which is looking for transformation and will undergo a purging to eliminate whatever obstacles hinder that process. Recent years have tested our ability to draw from an instinctual nature whilst also acting appropriately as the evolved person we are becoming. Many hard lessons have been taught to us about what happens when base urges take the lead. Sagittarius is a very different beast and is always seeking to refine it’s nature through intelligent understanding. This is a time when our beliefs, philosophical attitudes and spiritual orientation will be put to the test. What stands up under severe scrutiny is probably worth keeping, everything else is questionable.
The Solstice on the 21st is followed by the New Moon in the first degree of Capricorn, the sign of the sea goat. This mythical creature represents our dual drive of instinct and emotion alongside our innate ambition to rise up and become an honourable and civilised human being. Make time to consider what you’ve learned and achieved lately, the hard won lessons are the most worthwhile. Reflect on what you truly value and on what has served you well over time. Use these insights to bolster and sustain you now before you turn your attention to the year ahead and any plans you may have for the future.
If last month you felt that for every step forward you had to take one, or several, steps back then you’ll be pleased to know that September brings a change of pace. Whilst the energetic and feisty Mars was under the constraints of a sober and moderate Saturn during the last few weeks every move was tempered, hindered or frustrated. Mars as the faster paced planet is pulling away from Saturn’s influence now and things that have been delayed or thwarted lately, begin to gain some momentum. The intense and sometimes obsessive Scorpio placement of Mars continues through until the 13th when the red planet moves into fast paced and forward looking Sagittarius. This shift could speed things up on every level, as personal and global scenarios that recently seemed impossibly difficult but compelling become “unstuck” Agendas that have been put on hold can now be redirected in a more flexible or positive way.
The early days of September can bring a sense of increasing emotional sensitivity and intuitive understanding as the Moon waxes to Full in watery Pisceswhere it also joins with Chiron, the wounded healer. During this last perigee Full Moon or “Super Moon” of the year the tides will be high and emotions will run deep. A Pisces Moon puts us in touch with our non physical senses and this super cognitive awareness can bring in additional information not usually available.
Combined with Chiron there could be a real opportunity to make sense of deep emotional scars that have kept us in fearful or limited situations for far too long. Healer Chiron helps us to make the leap between Saturn with his earthbound conditioning and Uranus which inspires us towards being our authentic self.
As the month progresses into the third week the small but powerful Pluto starts his forward motion once more on the 22nd. Planet of transformation through trial, Pluto brings the unseen, shadowy underworld into the light for purification. We can expect revelations to come from deep within our personal psychology or previously hidden information about global organisations to be exposed.
On the 23rd we have the Autumn Equinox as the Sun moves into Libra followed by the New Moon in Libra on the 24th. Whatever else is going on around us now, a strong focus on the Venus ruled sign of balance, equality and harmony brings our need for meaningful relationships to our attention and we’ll seek out significant people to have those important shared experiences with.
After the momentous New Moon in Leo on 26th July the pattern for the coming months has begun to unfold. The recent Sun Moon combination in conjunction with mighty Jupiter in the sign of the Lion gave a strong message about living out our heart’s desire in a creative and original way. We can watch this dynamic energy begin to manifest in our personal lives over the next two weeks leading up to the Full Moon in Aquarius. Something that has been emerging can now become a reality either in the material world as new events and opportunities or on an inner level through our changing beliefs or understanding. The specific area of life where we can expect to experience this expansion depends on where each lunation falls in our personal birth chart.
As we approach this month’s Full Moon there could be an increased awareness of what the slow moving planet, Saturn, represents now that it’s started a forward motion once more after weeks of apparent backwards motion since early March. Taking about two and a half years to move through a Zodiac sign, Saturn now moves forward through Scorpio for the next five months before entering into Sagittarius. The ringed planet is the furthest within our solar system visible to the naked eye and acts as a boundary, defining the limits formed between us in our material world and the metaphysical realms beyond. Saturn speaks of restrictions that are sometimes frustrating but can prove to be fruitful if we have the patience to allow something to come to full term. An imposed limitation can act as both a freedom restricting prison or a character building test of endurance.
In Scorpio there is a power struggle – control versus acceptance or resistance versus surrender. Since October 2012 we have seen this dynamic in action in our personal lives as well as on the world stage. Whilst in a retrograde motion the focus has taken us on an inner journey where we have had the chance to discover how much of our personal stress is due to resistance to reality or attempting to control situations when it’s really not our business or in our own best interests to hold on. Now that Saturn is going forward again we can utilise the lessons learned and be more disciplined and measured about how we operate when activating our will or intention.
The Moon – Sun opposition at Full Moon make a difficult square angle to Saturn which indicates a needed release of tension. The Moon in altruistic Aquarius puts our sentiments firmly in the shoes of another whilst the Sun strongly placed in it’s own sign of Leo suggests a display of courage and expression of a truthful heart’s desire. We want what is not only most true for ourselves but also what best serves the greater good. The tension develops as we look to find an appropriate outlet or way to manifest this energy.
As we progress through the month the feisty planet Mars, which is also strong in it’s own sign of Scorpio now, joins with Saturn to form a conjunction which becomes exact at the New Moon on the 25th. The red planet Mars is known as the god of war and can also represent the warrior energy that when turned inwards does battle with the “inferior self”so that the “superior self” can take it’s place.
Joined with the great teacher planet Saturn we can expect to be faced with a situation when we need to put our recently learned skills and hard won personal wisdom into practice. With the Sun – Moon combined in Virgo at New Moon this suggests a new cycle of discernment whilst perfecting our ability to handle life in a measured and mature way.
June provides some particularly important astrological events whilst the Sun approaches it’s most northerly point at Solstice on 21st.
Venus, which has recently been such a spectacular light in the early evening sky as she follows the setting Sun, has disappeared from view. For the last few weeks she has been her closest to earth and a most powerful presence shining brightly on a clear night. From mid May, in retrograde motion she has been rapidly moving closer to the Sun and now is so close she is invisible to us. It takes about another four days before Venus reappears ahead of the Sun at dawn as the “Morning Star”.
This “death” and “rebirth” of Venus in her 584 day cycle is the focus for many ancient myths and legends from around the world. In 2012 there is a further dimension to this important cycle. On June 6th (June 5th GMT) she will pass exactly between the Earth and Sun in a rare transit which occurs about every 120 years in two phases, eight years apart. The first transit of this current phase occurred in 2004.
In Mercury ruled Gemini the emphasis is on communication and social connections. In our western culture Venus represents what we value and is widely known as the Goddess of love but also has associations with the fertility of the earth and as the Morning star, war. Representing the many faceted archetype of femininity the rebellious and feisty Goddess can be formidable when removing obstacles to a hearts desire!
Adding to the astrological conditions in early June is a Full Moon eclipse on 4th. This is likely to bring social issues to a peak, reaching a point of no return, heightening tensions and demanding action. Whilst the Sun/Venus in Gemini is opposite the Moon in Sagittarius they receive a challenging square aspect from Mars in Virgo. This tense dynamic could trigger a strong response to any restrictions touching on freedom of expression, communication or social interaction.
Watch out for disruption within any of the usual media outlets in the next weeks and months. Some forms of exchange or communication may become unworkable, be closed down or fail somehow, but if this is the case it will ultimately lead to a redesigned replacement that better serves the current era.
This theme is continued as expansive and forward looking Jupiter enters Gemini on 12th where it will stay for about a year. These transits can potentially bring great strides in our communication and significant leaps in our consciousness and perception.
To add to the general feeling of movement and progressive change, on 24th the outer planets Uranus and Pluto move into the exact position for the first really challenging aspect to each other since the 1960s. This pair will move in and out of this square angle seven times during the next four years and is the underlying theme for this phase in our personal and collective evolution.
The upheaval within our establishment, political structures and governments will continue during this period. We can expect further “meltdown” of social structures and financial systems in the near future. There will be revolution and rebellion as conflicting ideologies clash and incompatible agendas collide.
Although difficult at times this planetary tension provides the dynamic energy required for us to reach the potential that lies ahead in the following years.
This month’s Full Moon is at 15° Sagittarius on the 4th June at 12:13pm with the New Moon at 29° Gemini on the 19th at 4:02pm
