New Year turbulence as Mercury retrograde squares Mars

Systema Solare et PlanetariumDuring the last week of 2015 and into very early January the planets have us in an upbeat and optimistic mood as we welcome all the good things to come in 2016 with fresh starts and new leaves turned.

Just when it seemed like some forward progress was made, the planets show us that there is a change of plan, or several. By the end of the first week of New Year we are left wondering what happened as the confusion and crisis roll back in like the recent storms.

Mars moves into Scorpio on 3rd January where he stays until early March. Very much in his home teritory here but Mars can use his forceful drive in a secretive manner in Scorpio and he is in a challenging square to Mercury which just entered Aquarius but is now turning retrograde for about three weeks. Any new year resolutions or ulturistic goals may yeild very little real substance.

Deals or agreements made this early in the year may come to nothing. At worst there may have been deliberate lies or trickery within generous promises, especially those made on the world stage. Hasty descisions and impulsive responses may create unwelcome conflicts. On a personal level there may be harsh words spoken, promises broken and threats to break away. All this done in the heat of the moment may have longer term repercussions but whilst Mercury is back in Capricorn and the retrograde zone up to mid February there will be opportunity to renegotiate and repair and even improve our connections for the better in the longer term.

With the Sun conjoining Pluto on 6th January whilst moving to square Uranus the energy of the Uranus Pluto square that described 2012 – 2105 is activated again. This triggers the collective unrest once more and brings further acts of terrorism and attempts to break free from oppresive domination.

Because Mercury is apparently moving backwards it passes over Pluto twice in a short space of time and is almost stationary in that position as it turns to move forward once more. Expect strong views and extreme attitudes to be expressed now. This attitude can lead to a strong polarisation and set one viewpoint against another. The desire to be right or hold the moral high ground is a strong motivation for some and Pluto will bring these issues to the forefront as they need to be resolved. This is a theme which will repeat throughout the year and until a more enlightened approach is taken.

With Jupiter currently in Virgo there’s a lot of attention to detail and the desire for really getting things sorted out is going to focus our energy, especially in areas of our health and natural environment. When Jupiter turns retrograde in early January until early May we can address these important areas and find solutions to resolve any problems that have become apparent since last August. The early year may be troublesome but with a lot of hard work put in to problem solving it can yield very satisfactory results in the coming months.

But Seriously Folks! – Why Horoscopes Are Comforting

astrologers pointingWhy Horoscopes Are Comforting

“Neuroscience research indicates that predictions can alter perception and even modify brain activity in the direction of what is expected.”

Yes, and not a new concept for many.

This recent NY Times article points out that what you believe is what you get – well in it’s way. Suggesting that we love our horoscope columns and Astrological predictions so we can feel good and secure about our future – and whilst I’m currently writing the forecast for 2016 this is top of my mind.

http://www.nytimes.com/…/what…/why-horoscopes-are-comforting

My main message now (before I publish the overview of the year) is that it’s up to you to decide what future you want.
Don’t let your current situation make it seem unlikely.
Keep your focus totally on the good things in life.
Small things are easiest – just having a hot drink and some food – that’s a good thing to be celebrated!
Build on those small miracles and just keep that theme going. Know that the future holds so many more of those moments and then feel how good that will be to experience when you get there.
Yep, that’s your future!

That’s it for now – back to writing the future for me!

Uranus opposite Mars, a change of purpose? Neptune Dreams & Solstice Celebrations

Sunrise-SpaceDuring early December as the Sun approaches the Solstice, it’s nearly midwinter for us in the northern hemisphere and a perfect opportunity to view the pre-dawn sky, particularly if you’re not a naturally early riser! The late sunrise and clear cold skies will give a chance to see the waning crescent Moon drop a little further each day, past the bright planets, Jupiter, then Mars and finally Venus before it joins with the Sun at the New Moon phase. Saturn, rising just ahead of the Sun is so close now it’s not visible. Taking some quiet time to star gaze can really help to put things into perspective. This is especially so when there’s such demand for our attention now with the short days, busy pre Christmas preparations and world news broadcasts creating fear and stress as we imagine the worst.

With the current astrological “weather” it is even more important to keep a check on what we focus on. Become aware of how much mental and emotional energy is given to worry, anxiety, fear and a sense of helplessness. Take advantage of the astrological climate to change those thoughts into something more positive and empowering now. The challenging aspect between Saturn and Neptune began to make its self known in mid November and will continue in the background throughout the next year. The shifts and changes seem to be intensified and there can be a growing sense of unreality. Bombarded with too much information, the world around us can seem quite surreal. Keeping a grip on reality is the personal challenge.

It will become increasingly apparent that so much in our world is actually no more than a creation of imagination or ideas that are believed to be true, or just something that everyone agrees with and never paused to question. Taking “time to stand and stare” or pause and reflect quietly has become a lost art for many, but it is an essential practice during the coming weeks and months. The New Moon on the 11th is in Sagittarius and in a natural placement to begin a sincere quest for truth.

Over the whole New Moon phase and into the next weeks the effect of Mars in opposition to Uranus will be apparent. There may be struggles or argument as the forceful will of Mars is in direct conflict with the unpredictable nature of Uranus. This is certainly a time when a sudden change of direction or purpose is likely. It can have a very positive effect, once things have settled. When two high energy planets clash like this it can be disruptive and seem to happen beyond any individual control. It may create chaos as the old goal or objective is blown out, in favour of new, more liberal ideals. Self-centred or self serving desires of an individual or group can be overridden by a “live and let live” attitude but there is likely to be some shocking news, incident or revelation that forces a change in perspective first.

Also on the same day, we have Venus in Scorpio in a supportive trine aspect with Neptune in Pisces. This highlights the things that are important, going deeply into things, what we value in life and what higher ideals we have. It supports compassion, inclusion and love regardless of differences and despite social taboo. Start looking out beyond what’s immediately apparent and seek new dreams, ideas or beliefs. Read uplifting words. Research new facts rather than automatically accept what is simply repetition. Think up your next question instead of responding with the ready answer. These options are ways to antidote some of the more challenging aspects involving Mars and Uranus and to ensure the balance is tipped towards a positive experience for the Solstice and Full Moon Midwinter festivities.

The December New Moon is at 20° Sagittarius on the 11th at 10:31am. The Full Moon is at 4° Cancer on the 25th at 11:11am. (UT)

Happy Solstice Season!

Saturn square Neptune – Reality Shifts, Living the Dream or Losing the Plot?

Saturn spaceThe midpoint between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice is an important point in the progress of the Sun through the year. Seasonal festivities are now mainly focussed around Halloween but the actual “cross quarter day” is on the 7th. Many of the stone megaliths throughout Europe indicate the Sun’s alignment to a specific point in the landscape. These ancient markers remind us of the cyclic nature of our solar year. By following the movements of the planets we can also become aware of much bigger cycles within society and our group consciousness.

The main Astrological event this month is a significant point in a dynamic relationship between Saturn and Neptune that takes about 36-37 years to complete. This current square angle will be active until mid September 2016 and is likely to bring about huge shifts in our awareness, viewpoints and attitudes, both on the personal level and within the mass consciousness. This phase will take us through to 2025 and a completion of this cycle.

The square angle is a challenge, an uncomfortable situation which requires action. Saturn acts as a teacher and represents the world of physicality. There are responsibilities, conditions and inevitable consequences that come with the human experience. We all experience the doubts, fears and insecurities of living in a three dimensional state. Understanding how to navigate the material world brings self discipline, resourcefulness and also practical wisdom.

Whenever we encounter Saturn we are being asked to take a reality check – are our limits supporting us or preventing further growth? Do we need to rewrite our contracts, check our boundaries or face up to something?

Neptune is almost opposite in nature. It draws us to a non material world beyond the limitations of physicality. It dissolves the boundaries of time and space. We touch into the dream world of mystery, illusion and delusion whenever Neptune is in our consciousness. There are no limitations with Neptune, no definition or structure. It speaks to us of unseen worlds beyond the physical senses, an infinite oneness. It invites us to experience the realm of spirit.

Saturn is currently in Sagittarius whilst Neptune is in Pisces, and both these signs are ruled by Jupiter, the “feel good” planet. Jupiter seeks happiness, meaning, something beyond the mundane and ultimately, a sense of joy. Sagittarius is philosophical, a truth seeker whilst Pisces is merging with mystical realms. The challenge indicated by the current square angle will bring up issues of moral or spiritual significance as we are encouraged to expand and grow into something beyond our current experience.

The themes during the coming months will be about our commonality, compassion and connection to all life. The next challenge will be to represent this expanded awareness in our social systems and organisations. There will be reality shifts. Sometimes this could be a through a profound revelation of spiritual understanding or it could be due to a disintegration of what seemed to be reliable and trustworthy into a state of chaos. The next year will be arduous for anyone who has not begun to explore higher truths that are inclusive rather than separatist or divisive. Disillusionment has to happen as the existing illusion breaks down. For those who are very entrenched in the material world this can translate into a sense of self righteousness, religious fanaticism or determination to bring law and order into areas of perceived chaos. For those who are already consciously seeking on a spiritual level the challenges will be found where dreams or ideals don’t match with daily life. The bottom line here from Saturn is “Get Real” and from Neptune “Let Go to the Flow” The challenge is to do both simultaneously!

If you want to know how these important planetary dynamics are likely to impact on a personal level you’ll need to know how  they interact with your own birth chart.  I can discuss this and many other astrological details with you in a reading of your chart. Get in touch for an appointment.

October Astro Update – Relationship Focus, Mars & Venus join with Jupiter –

F&L 01The big Lunar eclipse of last month probably had you put your attention on relationships with it’s Aries and Libra focus. October will continue with this theme and it’s not just the relationship with your “soul mate” or “significant other” that’s being brought into view for consideration now.

Venus, the planet most closely associated with love and relationships is in Leo as we start this month and now that the Sun is in her zodiac sign Libra, she gets extra strength. Venus is also the planet which represents our values and what we want to include in our lives simply because it’s meaningful. She urges us towards social inclusion and harmonious connections. When she moves into Virgo, home sign of planet Mercury on the 8th she is once again strengthened because Mercury is currently in Libra (her sign). In Virgo, Venus wants to be discerning and practical and definitely wants to get it right. Venus goes on to make a challenging square aspect to Saturn on the 11th making us aware of any conflicting desire for equality and openness versus prudence and temperance. This is especially relevant now with Saturn, planet of boundaries and limits, firmly in Sagittarius, the sign of the truth seeker. We can expect to be confronted by issues of censure and exclusion during the next couple of years.

The strongest dynamic during October is the conjunction of Mars to Jupiter exact on 17th but can be felt for several days either side of that date. When all that action centred, physical drive energy of Mars is combined with the “let the good times roll” planet Jupiter it could bring on some crazy party vibes or the required thrust to get some adventurous project under way. This duo have a well earned reputation for taking risks or going to excess but with both these planets in conscientious Virgo the energy can be carefully directed and precision timed for best effect. While this forceful pair team up they are also connecting with powerful Pluto in a supportive trine aspect which gives an extra sense of determined focus to achieve something momentous.

Not to be left out of the limelight we have Venus following in the footsteps of Mars. Throughout the month she keeps our focus on personal values, social relationships and a desire for the beautiful things in life, ensuring we don’t lose sight of what’s most important to us. Venus also connects positively with Pluto, on 23rd giving us the boost we need to completely align ourselves with the very best “win win” situations. She goes on to join with upbeat Jupiter on 25th just in time for the Full Moon in her sign on 27th This line up gives a real sense of having something to celebrate and be grateful for. To finish off the month on a high note, the love goddess Venus catches up with her warrior consort Mars bringing the two archetypal aspects of human relationship together just in time for Samhain.

Virgo Vibes & Solar Eclipse – September astro events

Sometime in the near fullmoon future you may be able to look back to this September as the month you got your life in order. Or, if not the whole life plan, at least some aspect of it! It could simply be a case of organising some paperwork or tidying a space but for the more ambitious this is the time to make some real progress with practical projects or realigning your life goals to the original blueprint.

The dominant energy this month has a Virgo vibe. Jupiter the expansive “feel good” planet has now moved into this sign since mid August and stays for about a year. Virgo wants to attend to, and fix, whatever doesn’t seem to fit the pattern or natural order of things. In many ways this is expressed as a critical position by picking up on what is wrong in any given situation – or person! Used constructively this analytical attention to details can help with the process of clearing out the deadwood, throwing out clutter, amending destructive habits and creating an easier flow or rhythm.

The Sun made it’s conjunction to Jupiter in late August and was in Virgo for the Full Moon of 29th. That energy carries forward into September and the New Moon Solar eclipse on 13th.

As always a New Moon is a seed point for the next Lunar cycle. Other astrological events around this time add to it’s potential. Although this month’s partial Solar eclipse isn’t especially powerful as a world event trigger, it may well be experienced in more subtle but significant ways on a personal level.

Virgo is ruled by the quicksilver messenger planet, Mercury and in this earthy sign the “dealing with data” Mercurial energy is more focussed on practical matters to do with our environment, body, health and food systems. A Solar eclipse is a moment in time when the usual pattern is disrupted whilst the energy of the Sun is obscured by the shadow of the passing Moon. It’s a pause and a chance to make changes, like a system re-boot on a computer or a scenery change in between acts in the theatre.

With Jupiter’s future orientated energy which is always seeking something beyond it’s current state – a bigger, better, improved version of life, positioned in opposition to Neptune now, there could be some disorientation of goals. Neptune casts it’s influence out by dissolving boundaries and breaking the barrier between what is easily defined in material terms and what is more subtle or mystical. Confusion or disruption is possible, but also that lapse of determination or focus could allow another possibility to take form. These are all good supports for making changes to physical structures and mental habits that leave us with less than the best in health or well being. Take the dreams of Neptune and the opportunities given by a buoyant Jupiter to the extreme. Use this Virgo focus to really attend to the details, set some new patterns in place, then relax and allow that natural organising force of nature to do the rest.

Venus & Uranus retrograde, Saturn direct. Jupiter, Venus conjunct – A busy start to August!

principlesAstrologically August starts out with a few busy days. The last week of July has set the pace, when Venus turned to retrograde motion on 25th July and Uranus followed suit on the 26th. We now have five planets in retrograde which includes all the slower heavyweights, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. This is a clean up operation. Whilst going “backwards” a planet is re- treading past territory and this gives us the call to attend any loose ends, details or unfinished business with the issues that each planet represents. The slower – farther from earth – the planet is, the more thorough that process has to be. That’s quite a workload right now!

The second Full Moon of July on 31st in Aquarius put the focus on our relative position within the greater scheme of things. It may well have highlighted our role in the community or made us consider what we bring as an individual to contribute to the bigger picture as a whole. Where we aren’t satisfied, or remain unclear or just not matching up to our own ideals, will all be given an overhaul in the coming weeks and months.

As August gets under way, Saturn, known to some as the “Lord of Karma” reaches the point where he turns to go forward once more, having been retrograde since March. He has travelled back into Scorpio as far as his position last December, so there has likely been some harsh lessons and thwarted plans during this time. Saturn’s role is to constrain or provide structure, discipline and substance to our lives. It is through learning from experience, over time, that we really get the chance to develop our endurance and resilience and also we’re frequently compelled to yield to forces of time and the limits of physical reality whenever Saturn in involved. These experiences can be frustrating, but also potentially enlightening and ultimately liberating gifts to our lives. By November Saturn will reach the point he had progressed to before turning back. We can then start to really move away from the lessons of the last 2-3 years into a new phase with Saturn staying in Sagittarius during the next couple of years.

The main planetary activity is around 28 degrees of the fixed signs for the first week of August as this is where all the action takes place. Whilst Saturn is changing direction he is in a challenging aspect with both the “feel good” planets – Venus and Jupiter. Anyone born between 20th – 23rd of January, April, July or October will be strongly affected as will anyone with a late degree ascendant or personal planet in late Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius.

As Venus goes backwards she links up with Jupiter for the second time this summer on the 4th. This puts the focus on love, relationships and money but this time round with Saturn involved, it shows up where we feel things are less than satisfactory. This is the time to make adjustments, re-negotiate the contracts and ask how we are making boundaries or limitations that don’t do us any favours. It’s not all bad though. This is our opportunity to firm up where we let things slide or were a bit unclear to begin with. We can set out something more solid and reliable now. Maybe less exciting, romantic or adventurous but certainly more likely to withstand the test of time and serve us well in to the future.

The August New Moon is at 22° Leo on the 14th at 2:55pm with the following Full Moon at 7° Pisces on the 29th at 6:36pm (UT)
