April, Mars Retrograde – Feisty planet unleashed!

mars-cropA retrograde planet is doing something out of the usual ordered pattern and so it can act as an unpredictable force let loose.

Our Solar star, the Sun, is the life giving centre for our corner of the cosmos and at this time of year the Solar energy is transmitted through the sign of Aries. The Sun is blessed (in it’s exaltation) in this fire sign nearly as much as when it’s in it’s own fire sign, Leo. This time of year also has the force of Mars behind it, as ruler of Aries. Mars represents the potent primal drive in life and we see it strongly expressed as the vital energy of Spring. The main theme for this month has an emphatic Mars right up front, taking the lead in planetary events. Our “red planet” is currently in another fire sign, Sagittarius which also gives some extra thrust to an already feisty mode of expression. After the last few weeks of change, redirection and anti-climax all this assertive energy can have us impatient to make progress.

Trouble might be looming if we fail to take care as this next phase could bring further hindrance when all that fully charged up Martian drive goes into reverse mid month on the 17th. This current retrograde period for Mars will echo a similar one of fifteen years ago when his retrograde was also in Sagittarius. If that was a year of significant change or re-routing for you, then this year may have some similar trends in store. In general, the apparent backwards motion of Mars is a time when trying to push forward in an obvious, direct or dynamic way proves unproductive. A retrograde planet is doing something out of the usual ordered pattern and so it can act as an unpredictable force let loose.  Energy is hard to harness, initiatives seem slow to complete and the use of force yields little of the desired result. This retrograde lasts until the end of June and doesn’t clear fully until Mars regains it’s original ground in mid August.

This is a more internalised Mars than usual which is why it could become a virtual powder keg, ready to be set off when antagonised. Be careful not to let the frustration build up. Be aware of any anger that is being suppressed. Put your attention on finding ways to redirect your vitality into positive and self supporting initiatives. The power of this transit is best used for subjective or personal work. A lot can be achieved during a Mars retrograde phase. Get the basic needs of life in order. Recognise where you have an excess of energy or an abundance of something in your life and utilise it to overcome any sense of lack you have experienced.

Take notice of where Mars is in your own birth chart, if you know, and use these next weeks to better understand your personal way of expressing desires, your goals and how you achieve them. This is the best time to adjust the way that you dissipate or dilute your physical energy so it can be more productive for you in the future. You may feel the effect of this phase more strongly if you have your Sun or Moon in Aries or Scorpio or have either of those signs rising. Also, if Mars is combined with a personal planet or critical angle it will energise that area of your chart in particular.

The New Moon and Full Moon this month also support working with the Mars energy as they both occur in Mars ruled signs. The New Moon on 7th April falls on the most powerful degree for the Sun in Aries, so it’s especially potent for setting out new intentions for personal goals in preparation for the Mars retrograde period. The Full Moon in Scorpio on the 22nd is a time when any pent up emotions could find forceful expression. If you experience some uncontrolled release or passionate outburst take it as a signal that some part of your life needs attention. Allow any unexpected changes to serve as an opportunity to head in a new direction and make it become something positive in your life.

April Full Moon Lunar Eclipse aligns with Uranus & Pluto

tree of life17thCA breakdown, breakthrough or break out! With a potential for release of tension & necessary discharge of emotional energy this Lunar eclipse is an opportunity for another major step in our important relationships & self development.

After last month’s peak in astrological excitement April is going to seem quite unremarkable by comparison. We do though have some planetary events that hold great potential for really working with, and moving on from, what was brought out in these recent weeks.

The month opens with a fire trine aspect between the Sun in Aries and Jupiter in Leo on 2nd. This is a powerful “up beat” energy boost from two planets that bring a positive energetic vibe working together to bring out the best of their respective traits. Use this as an opportunity for creative expansion, exciting adventure or the inspiration to embark on a new enterprise.

On the 4th we have this months headline event – a total lunar eclipse! Although not visible in Europe we can still experience the astrological effects. At every Full Moon the Sun is on one side of the earth and casts it’s light onto the face of the Moon on the opposite side of the earth. When the earth is in exact alignment in the middle (twice each year) it’s shadow obscures the Moon for about 2 hours, hence the eclipse.

As the Moon reaches it’s culminating phase at Full so we can expect the fulfilment of whatever was in focus at the last New Moon (the solar eclipse of March) and being a lunar eclipse this is a time of great release. If you sensed the tension that built up during last month as Uranus and Pluto reached their final exact square and then felt some relief after the Solar eclipse you might recognise some of that same energy being expressed again in early April. Both the Sun and Moon align with Uranus and Pluto within orb of the lunar eclipse degree.

Our intentions, aims and personal will was aligned during last months solar eclipse and now we can clear away remaining emotional blockages, fears or inhibitions that prevent us moving more fully in to the new possibilities. Just a couple of hours after the lunar eclipse the Moon will be square to Pluto which can dredge up old fear feelings or deep seated issues that have been unconsciously inhibiting our responses. The Moon is then opposite Uranus just four hours after the eclipse which could bring a sudden emotional discharge, unexpected breakthrough – or a break away!

As the Sun connects with Pluto on the 5th and then Uranus on the 6th the solar energy of self determination gets another stimulating kick towards the, recently revealed, new version of yourself. The next planet to get involved in this game (on the 8th) is Mercury, who represents our thinking process, communications and way of exchanging ideas and information. This could bring about a revolutionary shift or change in what you think, or say, and even how you express your innermost or secret thoughts.

The overall effect of this dynamic pattern around the lunar eclipse could produce a powerful emotional release. If you’re ready, and welcoming the current changes, it can be an exciting step forward. If however you’re resistant to upheaval in your personal life it could mean a rough ride for a couple of weeks. This phase is a further shedding of old patterns or reactions and a time to let go of the past. Anything that we cling to as familiar or that gives us a sense of security or well being but is actually more of a limitation than a comfort needs to be discarded. As the big “feel good” future orientated planet, Jupiter ends its retrograde phase to move forward once more, also on the 8th, we can really get a stronger sense of the new and very inviting horizon that’s coming into view.

Planet Update – Astrology April 2012

This current Moon phase started with the New Moon on March 22 just two days after the spring equinox when the Sun moved into Aries. The dark phase of the Moon, when it reflects no light from the Sun and invisible to us, is a point of low energy with an apparent pause before the new crescent Moon becomes briefly visible once more, soon after sunset. Its reappearance marks a renewal and optimum time for initiation or beginnings. The sign of Aries is the first in the Zodiac and the movement of the Sun into that sign at equinox marks the start of the new Solar cycle. What we are experiencing now is the effect of both Lunar and Solar cycles commencing almost simultaneously in the very potent first few degrees of Aries.

Adding to the vibrancy, the two most excitable planets Uranus and Mercury were also in the first few degrees of Aries. This is giving us an exaggerated sense of stimulation and super fast pace for the weeks ahead. You may find that you have more things than usual needing your attention and probably more than you can easily manage in your allotted time. The area of life indicated by the location of Aries is in your birth chart will be most affected. This intense frantic energy should cool off a bit when the Moon becomes Full around the 6th April and the work or events of the last couple of weeks, begin to show its promise. There will finally be some sense of completion or resolution and maybe some breathing space, as the Moon comes back to the New phase on 21st.

This lively pace though, will likely continue as Mercury returns to forward motion on 4th although he doesn’t move beyond his retrograde degree until the 23rd. This release of energy should help with getting on top of all the connections, correspondence and everyday tasks that have built up. Mars in Virgo has also been retrograde since mid January and this will have stalled or thwarted putting plans into action. He turns direct once more on 14th and will pick up momentum gradually into June. Some of that frustrated energy might break loose around that time so just be aware of any potential flash points.

In the background but adding to the mix in keeping the pressure on, we see Venus move into excitable Gemini on the 3rd. Venus loves to be around others, charming and beguiling, partying and indulging, she is our most sociable planet. Mercury ruled Gemini is the sign most strongly associated with fast paced ideas, communications and changeability. Venus here is a social butterfly, making connections and passing information around, not lingering to contemplate, just enthusiastically rushing on to the next new thing. She stays in this sign for a lengthy four months and also makes her rare occultation of the Sun in mid Gemini on June 6th.

Social networking is going to be a big theme during these next months, whether its through internet media or good old fashioned social gatherings. There is a need for people to talk and exchange views. The issues that pull people together into like minded groups have to be shared and common values will need to be discussed. When messenger Mercury conjuncts with innovative Uranus in feisty Aries on 22nd we can expect some mental sparks to fly. He then makes a challenging angle to transformative Pluto on 25th. Don’t be surprised to find yourself thinking surprising new thoughts and don’t be too shocked if you find out some things are not the way you thought they were. The planets are telling us to keep up. We’re going through rapid changes and we need to adapt our thinking to match the new situation or we risk being left behind, wondering “what happened?”

The next Full Moon is at 18° Libra on the 6th April at 8:19pm and the New Moon is at 2° Taurus on the 21st at 8.20am

April Astrology Update

The New Moon opposite Saturn sets the tone for this month whilst we get a strong dose of Aries energy to fire us up. This is going to feel like two very different forces at odds with each other and there will be plenty of frustration as a result. At New Moon both the Sun and Moon occupy the same Zodiac degree and on the 3rd they are sharing that space with expansive Jupiter. This new phase is the time to get things started and plan for the coming weeks. Jupiter exaggerates things and we could get carried away on a wave of optimism as we head off towards the “greener grass” even if it’s simply to have any experience of something beyond what we already know just for the sake of change. There are a total of six planets in feisty Aries this month. That forceful energy is all for new ventures and doesn’t linger to see what the drawbacks might be or look over its shoulder at the debris left in its wake. The impulsive warrior planet Mars enters its own sign, Aries on the 2nd and joins with erratic Uranus. This is another volatile combination that suggests the urge to break free of restraints is combined with force or aggression. The sixth planet in the mix is fast moving Mercury, now in retrograde motion until 23rd. As it travels backwards passing over Jupiter the Sun and Moon the messenger planet will bring news of the bold moves being taken and the inspiring ideas will spread like wildfire to those who are receptive. All this fresh momentum that is driving for change will be severely hampered by Saturn who is sitting in opposition in Libra. He is going to cause delays and setbacks as he puts the brakes on the impetuous planets in Aries. This is going to prove that what started as a decisive action is turning into a long and drawn out struggle against a mighty force. The influence of what has been in place over a considerable time is not to be underestimated and no amount of passionate rebellion or upsurge of energy is going to oust it without a struggle. We may have all the good intentions and an enthusiastic drive for change but this is going to be a long haul and deep seated and stubborn habits don’t give way that easily.

Sun in Aries Full Moon in Libra relationship focus April 2009

The Full Moon in Libra is of special importance each year being the first Full Moon following the Vernal (spring) equinox. Its significance is tied in with celebrations of spring and renewal whilst the date of Easter is always the first Sunday after this Full Moon. The annual position of the Sun in Mars ruled Aries and the Moon in Venus ruled Libra creates a relationship polarity and potential conflict of interests. If you know where 20° Libra falls in your chart you can examine the way this will affect you personally. Restless Full Moon energy can accentuate any social undercurrents or bring unconscious feelings to our attention. Any strong individual expression of the unique self as symbolised by the Sun is further strengthened by the independent assertiveness of Aries. At the same time our receptive, empathic and emotional qualities symbolised by the Moon are focused on harmonious relationships through Libra. This difficult paradox of self-interest versus social equilibrium is tempered this year by a very positive influence from Jupiter in Aquarius. The large planet urges us towards greater freedom but also to actions which are beneficial and brimming with good will to others. We can expect to see attempts to consider society’s collective needs whilst maintaining our valued freedom of self expression. We have another positive trend this month with Venus playing a leading role. She signifies our personal values and therefore what (or who) we are attracted to. Ruling Taurus she represents our relationship with the physical world. As ruler of Libra she brings social relationships into focus. Whilst she currently appears to travel backwards and then revisits the ethereal, sensitive and compassionate sign of Pisces on the 11th our hearts desires are being reviewed. A week later she turns to start her forward motion once more and moves into Aries on the 24th where she can now take on any opposition with fearless determination. For a few days around the 27th she can be seen rising just before the dawn at her brightest this year. After the Sun and Moon Venus is the next brightest celestial body.
Potential flash points this month: in particular the 15th sees feisty Mars conjoined with rebellious Uranus in Pisces. This volatile energy could spark some sudden action with little thought for the consequences. Tempers flare whilst explosive outbursts, unexpected rifts or accidents are all possible. Later in the month power struggles abound around the New Moon as the Sun connects with Pluto and Pluto is challenged by Mars. This suggests that seeking a position of control is uppermost in setting the scene for the May Full Moon.

The next Full Moon is at 20° Libra on 9 April at 4:56 pm and the next New Moon is at 5° Taurus on 25 April at 5:24 am

April Moon Astrology

The New Moon phase is the appropriate time to make plans, refine details and set things in motion. Aries is a doer, has courage (though some describe it as foolhardiness) and certainly doesn’t like to be held back by self doubt or minor technical details. This month we see Venus move into Aries on the 6th April just a couple of hours after New Moon. This gives the extra push to go for what we desire, perhaps taking up a challenge without our usual level headed approach, but that’s not always a bad thing. What’s important this month is to be certain we are not claiming something as ours at the expense of others. There is no room for selfish motives right now and if we are putting our own needs or desires above the rest then we will surely come unstuck as Venus makes a difficult angle to Pluto on the 8th. This month also highlights a phase which continues into 2024. Though Pluto was downgraded to the status of “dwarf planet” it has certainly not been diminished in its effects. Its transits are exceedingly potent and signify massive, long-term changes in life. Anyone undergoing a transit of Pluto to a personal planet can vouch for this. At 1 degree Capricorn, Pluto turns retrograde on 2nd April to head back into Sagittarius for a final uncovering of important power issues both on a personal and global level. Expect a great deal of intensity and forced transformation during this period which continues until the end of 2008. This will be particularly intense for those born 19th -23rd December, March, June or September or have planets in late degrees of the mutable signs (Virgo, Pisces, Sagittarius, Gemini) or early degrees of the cardinal signs (Capricorn, Cancer, Aries Libra). As Pluto moves again from Sagittarius into Capricorn later this year we begin a new global power structure. Pluto in Sagittarius has been about fundamental idealism, theories, concepts, expansion and growth. Capricorn, on the other hand, is about reality, practicality and firm foundations. It’s about the systems, structures and the resources life itself actually depends on: the food chain, social systems, national infrastructures, commerce and government. Whilst Pluto makes its short return visit into Sagittarius we should take time to review our plans for the future and ensure that we have made a commitment to building something that will endure and that we have started to make our changes voluntarily rather than wait until we are pushed.

The next New Moon is at 17° Aries on the 6th April at 04:56am

Moon Horoscope April

This month we see the farthest Full Moon of the year on April 2, and the closest New Moon of the year on April 17. The April Full Moon will be about 50,000 kilometres (30,000 miles) further from the earth than the April New Moon. The New or Full Moon coincides with the Moon’s most extreme declination or furthest distance from the celestial equator once every 14 lunar months. We can expect particularly large tides and disturbed weather patterns during the week of April 14-21.
The New Moon in Aries is the first since the spring equinox which marks the beginning of the new Astrological year when the Sun moves into the sign of Aries. This is the beginning of a new phase and with a strong and harmonious fire trine to Pluto it suggests positive endings which are necessary to make way for a new lease of life. We all eventually have to let go of things belonging to the past which hold us back and keep us from enjoying our future. Pluto helps us with that process and we can be assured that whatever lies ahead is definitely for the greater good. Any endeavours begun with this in mind will be virtually bullet proof and a firm foundation is assured for those who choose to take a leap based on the faith that it will turn out all right in the end, whatever happens in the near future.
Venus in Gemini squares Mars in Pisces in this lunation chart so expect some stress between the male and female aspects. It manifests either directly between the sexes or within ourselves through differences between what we value and our drive to attain those desires. Venus in Gemini is overflowing with ideas and wants to communicate them at high speed, whereas Mars in Pisces tends to want to retreat and imagine something otherworldly.
Jupiter, the largest of our planets turned retrograde on April 6 which will bring a chance to review our philosophies and beliefs regarding our continual urge to expand and conquer new territory. This continues through until August. Saturn ceases his retrograde motion and goes direct at 18 degrees of Leo on April 19. Though appearing to be stationary before moving forwards once more this is another major turning point. Saturn in Leo brings lessons about maintaining worthy principles and ethics. This is a time where we are demanding transparency in all political and corporate affairs. Having learnt some hard lessons about leaders who fall too short in that department we are now ready to move forward again. The general feeling this New Moon is “out with the old and in with the new”, or at least a timely overhaul.

This months New Moon is at 27° Aries on the 17th April at 12:37 pm
