May Planet Update – Beltaine, Full Moon in Scorpio – Passions run high

Planets15thCThe month of May begins with the celebration of Beltaine, a cross quarter day and fire festival which marks the halfway point of the Sun’s journey between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Although most commonly associated with Mayday and the 1st May the actual mid point falls a few days later – on the 5th this year. Many of the traditional customs that have survived through the ages represent a form of cleansing and re-seeding in preparation for the bountiful summer months.

With the Sun in the earthy sign of Taurus at this time of year the connection with our physical body and natural environment is very strong. At full Moon there is a culmination or peak in energy and because the Moon is always in the opposite sign to the Sun at the Full Moon phase, so we also have all the intense associations of Scorpio involved. Passions of all kinds can run high and emotions can go deep as a whole range of material, physical and practical issues come to a head. Whether this manifests as a satisfactory completion or a critical climax it is likely to be quite an event because Jupiter, known for it’s ability to exaggerate whatever it touches, is hitting a hard angle at both the Sun and Moon from fixed fire sign Leo. This Moon phase could highlight issues of individual personal expression as a human right particularly when it concerns any subject that has been considered a social taboo.

We can expect to have our beliefs and level of openness to new ideas challenged over the next few weeks as Saturn, planet of limitation and restraint is now in it’s retrograde phase, moving back to re-enter Scorpio in mid June. The small but powerful planet Pluto in Capricorn also turned to retrograde during April and will be in reverse until late September. This gives us the impetus to go back over some important and fundamental areas of our life. Looking at the systems, structures and supports which are no longer valid or sustainable, with a view to re-building or completely transforming what isn’t working well is the theme once more.

As the action planet Mars moves into Gemini mid month and confronts Saturn there will be an increase in the tempo of communications and information exchanges but it could be just a lot of “hot air” without the required will to follow through on any positive action.

The New Moon in Taurus on the 18th will bring us back to considering our core values and possibly a desire to indulge in the simpler things of life. On the 19th Mercury, in it’s own sign of Gemini and natural representative for all communications, travel and exchanges, turns to go retrograde until the second week of June. The emphasis is firmly on reconsidering, re-negotiating, revising and re-writing documents, travel arrangements, deals and trading. This provides an opportunity to edit, proof read or check the “small print” before we sign on the dotted line or embark on something new.

When Venus, ruling planet of Taurus, now in Cancer moves into exact opposition to Pluto on 22nd you may experience some resistance to your desires if they are just about fulfilling your own needs. The chances are that as Venus moves on to oppose unpredictable Uranus in Aries on 25th there may be the recognition once again that even excitement and high tension can become tedious and the simpler things of life can bring a longer lasting satisfaction so a deeper sense of nourishment can be enjoyed.

The Merry Month of May – Bealtaine, Venus in Aries & Mars in Libra goes direct

800px-Venus_and_MarsThis merry month is the start of the summer season and begins with our customary Mayday holidays.

Referred to as Beltane  or Bealtaine and usually celebrated as May 1st we are marking a cross quarter day. The four fire festivals, Bealtaine in May, Lughnasadh in August, Samhain in November and Imbolc in February, are remnants from a series of three day long festivities each marking a significant point on the Sun’s path through it’s seasonal journey. Several times over the centuries the yearly calendar has been changed so the holiday dates no longer coincide with the actual Solar events. On May 5th this year, when the Sun moves to 15° Taurus, we are at the halfway point, the cross quarter, between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. To the ancient Chaldean astrologers and their predecessors these were important rhythmic astronomical events within much larger cycles. May day celebrations in particular became associated with a raunchy time and much practising of various fertility rites. This May, both the planets Venus and Mars, commonly associated with physical love and relationships are highly significant.

In the wake of the Grand Cardinal Cross of April we will all have been realigned, rerouted or had something removed or redefined in our lives. This may have happened on a subtle inner level or quite distinctly through outer events, but something personal will have changed lately. As the immediate tension of the last months decline we will continue to experience the after shocks and repercussions of events now set in motion. Each time the zodiac degrees of the recent Grand cross or eclipses are triggered in the coming months by Lunar phases or other planetary transits the situation will progress. Unless you’ve been directly affected by world events and the shifting global trends the consequences may not be immediately obvious in your personal life.

Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter all get a prompt from Venus, planet of love and beauty, mid month. Just as the Full Moon increases to full potency, Venus, now in feisty Aries, the natural home of Mars, makes a challenging square angle to Pluto. This provocative energy can bring a sense of compulsion to any desires, a feeling that it’s “do or die” to gain what you value. Maybe what was once important is revealed to be much less desirable in this new light. As Venus moves on to connect with Uranus on the 16th there could be sparks flying with sudden and exciting changes in any affairs of the heart. There is more than a hint of adventure for anyone who dares to strike out. An unplanned departure from your usual tastes might be the stimulation you need to break free of an old association in preference for something new. Be aware of opportunity as Venus makes a challenging connection with expansive Jupiter on the 18th but the danger lies in going too far or taking on more than you can manage later.

As our action focused planet, Mars, journeys through the sociable sign of Libra, natural home to Venus, he has been less than comfortable and distinctly thwarted since his retrograde phase started in early March. Now on 20th May he finally turns direction to move forward once more. Expect a release of tension and a readiness for action not really felt since last December. With both love and lust planets in each others signs they are definitely working as a pair. Until Venus moves on into her own sign of Taurus just after the New Moon, the emphasis is on making or breaking connections, fulfilling desires and achieving personal goals. If the partnership area of your birth chart is also in on the action it could mean the start of a new romance.

This month’s Full Moon is at 24° Scorpio on the 14 May at 8:17pm and the New Moon is at 8° Gemini on the 28th at 7:40pm

Bealtaine, May 1

The celebration of Bealtaine or the month of May marks the cross quarter day or midpoint in the Sun’s progress between the vernal equinox and summer solstice. (Around May 6) It is traditionally a time to light fires for purification in preparation for the fertile summer months. This year the productive Taurus New Moon falls on May 5 and the few days surrounding it are the perfect time for sowing seeds of intent. The New Moon always marks the start of a new lunar cycle when our focus is inclined inward to reflect on the deeper issues of life whilst the Full Moon brings things to fruition. This New Moon is especially potent as a point of new beginnings. Saturn, planet of life lessons, stability and endurance starts its forward journey once more after five months of retrograde motion. A lot of fears, doubts and insecurities about the certainty of our future have been induced since the start of the year leaving us fretting and pessimistic. As Saturn turns again we also turn a corner as fears which have been internalised can now be dealt with externally. This is a time for well thought out decisions and practical forward planning based on what we’ve learnt. Supported by Jupiter, planet of enthusiasm, change and higher knowledge beginning its retrograde journey on May 9 it gives us time to do some inner truth seeking as we build up some internal pressure for dynamic action later in the year. The Planet of assertive action, Mars, moves out of Cancer where he has been very cautious and quiet into bold Leo, also on May 9, which means that soon we can really push ahead. Coinciding with the Scorpio Full Moon of May 20 Jupiter makes a favourable Sextile angle to Uranus, planet of change, individual expression and freedom. Occurring every 14 years, this is a significant astrological event and the second part of three phases; the first was in March this year. A maxim for this event could be that “the Truth will set you Free”. We have recently had to face some hard facts about the way we have conducted our affairs during the last decade. But with optimistic Jupiter in Capricorn we can learn, grow and liberate ourselves through hard work, discipline and personal integrity. Both Jupiter and Uranus are forward thinking and visionary, so it really is a great month to make plans for the future and thanks to fiery Mars we are building up the energy and drive needed to put them into action.

The next New Moon is at 16° Taurus on the 5 May at 1:19 pm

Bealtaine May 2007

May traditionally heralds the start of summer with the festival of Bealtaine, a cross-quarter day, marking the midpoint in the Sun’s progress between the vernal (spring) equinox and the summer solstice. The date of this fire festival which followed both lunar and solar cycles would have been held on the nearest Full Moon rather than the more recent May 1st date. This year the May Full Moon was on the 2nd but it varies each year. It is also interesting to note that before the Gregorian calendar was introduced to Ireland in 1752, “May Day” would have occurred 11 days later than today.
This Lunar Month starts with several of the tense and difficult aspects that occurred in late April now easing off and the volatile Mars-Uranus conjunction of 29th also behind us. Take some time to re-orientate as Venus opposes Pluto on 7th and watch how people try to reach for their goals despite resistance. Expect frustration and don’t rely on deadlines being met as obstacles and thwarted efforts cause delay. On 8th Venus moves into the sign of Cancer evoking feelings of sympathy, a yearning to put down roots, and a fondness for things that have stood the test of time. This is a phase where well thought out values and things held dear can be encouraged into taking on a greater significance. Some of last months stresses could return as Jupiter Squares Uranus on the 11th requiring some rethinking as a necessary part of life’s progress. Mars makes a challenging square to Pluto on 13th creating another test to see if ‘might’ rules over ‘right’ and as always with Pluto if an action is not for the greater good there will be debts to settle later. The drive to challenge others and assert oneself will be forefront during this coming New Moon phase as Mars enters its home sign of Aries on the 15th. This could be the start of another round of action in several spheres of life so expect to be busy for a while. Neptune begins its retrograde motion on the 24th (until October), as Venus makes a positive connection to Uranus bringing some new, interesting and welcome changes in our personal lives. During this time, on a global and personal level we might see some re-evaluation of our future vision with a greater striving towards high ideals and the possibility of innovative or unexpected attempts to create some cohesion through common values.
Next month brings us a Blue Moon, the first Full Moon of the month on June 1st with the second on June 30th.

The next New Moon is at 25° Taurus on the 16 May at 8:28 pm
