May Planet Update – Beltaine, Full Moon in Scorpio – Passions run high

Planets15thCThe month of May begins with the celebration of Beltaine, a cross quarter day and fire festival which marks the halfway point of the Sun’s journey between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. Although most commonly associated with Mayday and the 1st May the actual mid point falls a few days later – on the 5th this year. Many of the traditional customs that have survived through the ages represent a form of cleansing and re-seeding in preparation for the bountiful summer months.

With the Sun in the earthy sign of Taurus at this time of year the connection with our physical body and natural environment is very strong. At full Moon there is a culmination or peak in energy and because the Moon is always in the opposite sign to the Sun at the Full Moon phase, so we also have all the intense associations of Scorpio involved. Passions of all kinds can run high and emotions can go deep as a whole range of material, physical and practical issues come to a head. Whether this manifests as a satisfactory completion or a critical climax it is likely to be quite an event because Jupiter, known for it’s ability to exaggerate whatever it touches, is hitting a hard angle at both the Sun and Moon from fixed fire sign Leo. This Moon phase could highlight issues of individual personal expression as a human right particularly when it concerns any subject that has been considered a social taboo.

We can expect to have our beliefs and level of openness to new ideas challenged over the next few weeks as Saturn, planet of limitation and restraint is now in it’s retrograde phase, moving back to re-enter Scorpio in mid June. The small but powerful planet Pluto in Capricorn also turned to retrograde during April and will be in reverse until late September. This gives us the impetus to go back over some important and fundamental areas of our life. Looking at the systems, structures and supports which are no longer valid or sustainable, with a view to re-building or completely transforming what isn’t working well is the theme once more.

As the action planet Mars moves into Gemini mid month and confronts Saturn there will be an increase in the tempo of communications and information exchanges but it could be just a lot of “hot air” without the required will to follow through on any positive action.

The New Moon in Taurus on the 18th will bring us back to considering our core values and possibly a desire to indulge in the simpler things of life. On the 19th Mercury, in it’s own sign of Gemini and natural representative for all communications, travel and exchanges, turns to go retrograde until the second week of June. The emphasis is firmly on reconsidering, re-negotiating, revising and re-writing documents, travel arrangements, deals and trading. This provides an opportunity to edit, proof read or check the “small print” before we sign on the dotted line or embark on something new.

When Venus, ruling planet of Taurus, now in Cancer moves into exact opposition to Pluto on 22nd you may experience some resistance to your desires if they are just about fulfilling your own needs. The chances are that as Venus moves on to oppose unpredictable Uranus in Aries on 25th there may be the recognition once again that even excitement and high tension can become tedious and the simpler things of life can bring a longer lasting satisfaction so a deeper sense of nourishment can be enjoyed.

Stepping through a doorway in space & time – Solar Eclipse on the Spring Equinox

tiwanakuMarch of 2015 may be a month to remember in years to come. Another corner is being turned during a very significant phase in our collective evolution. It may not become apparent in your personal life immediately but changes that take place over the coming weeks will have a big impact on the course of events into the future.

The first few days of the month set a positive trend to get us tuned into the possibilities as we build up to the Full Moon on the 5th and on into the second week before the Equinox and Solar eclipse.

The current freedom of personal expression theme is boosted by the big “feel good” planet Jupiter connecting favourably with liberating Uranus on the 3rd and assertive Mars joining with expansive Jupiter on the 10th

Both Venus and Mars are still travelling close together in early Aries and this gives a full steam ahead energy from Mars to reach out for what you want. Venus in this sign is less inclined to co-operation and wants to act in her own right, choosing what suits her rather than being compromising. They both combine strongly with Uranus and then move on to challenge Pluto. If you haven’t already made some bold moves to claim your independence then this will give you the required impulse to be true to yourself. This pattern will help to get a clear sense of what it is that you want for yourself without being prejudiced by others, your dependence on them or fears of losing their love or respect.

Uranus and Pluto have been in a tense square pattern since 2012 and after the 17th they begin to finally part company for at least a decade, having done their work The rebellious, liberating planet Uranus also represents our authentic self – the spirit of individual and unique self expression. Pluto always highlights a power struggle and signifies whatever has control over us. Pluto’s realm is our unconscious and our fears which are powerful forces that will divert us away from acting for the good of all, or even in our own best interests. We’ve been given a choice to either defer to a “higher authority” that we have ascribed power to, or, strike out with integrity and honour and take personal responsibility for our own lives.

The culmination of the Uranus Pluto theme mid month is followed by a combination of important and powerful astrological events. Just a few hours before the Sun enters Aries on the 20th at the Equinox it lines up with the Moon and Earth for a Solar eclipse. This is a New Moon event in the 29th degree of Pisces, the last degree of the Zodiac circle. Significant in itself as a completion of a Lunar and Solar cycle, it also combines with the 19 year eclipse cycle on the cusp of the most potent degree of the Zodiac. This is a very special and rare occurrence. The sign of Pisces is about surrendering to a greater force, letting go of trying to impose a self centred or “man made” order and trusting the apparent chaos of “natural”order to work it out – going with the flow. The final degree of this sign represents the last step in this process. The next step is into Aries as a new individual with nothing but the desire to experience oneself, no judgement or fear. Just faith and courage combined with innocence, excitement and passion.

The opportunity we have this month is to make real changes – on a personal level, in our relationships, identity, attitudes, and beliefs. Allowing the required inner changes to occur without having a pre-ordained goal is a challenge. The potential to become something beyond anything that your imagination can come up with is so strong now that getting very clear in your overall intent, then surrendering to the infinite possibilities that are available, seems like the very best way to make the most these circumstances.

Anyone who has a birthday in March, June, September, or December between 19th to 22nd may experience this potent eclipse more directly than others. Also if you have a  planet, Ascendant or Midheaven at 29 degrees of Pisces, Virgo, Gemini or Sagittarius you may feel the impact strongly.  A planet at 29  or 1 degree of any Zodiac sign in your birth chart may be triggered by this month’s solar events.

Also 14 &15 degrees of Aries and Capricorn are highlighted, so any planet or significant point there will be activated along with those same degrees in Cancer and Libra in particular.

Astrology February 2015, Sun Jupiter opposition, Mars Venus conjunct & A Second New Moon in Aquarius!

SunStarDuring the first few days of February we have a cross quarter day, Imbolc, which marks the halfway point between winter solstice and spring equinox. With it we see a noticeable lengthening of the day that heralds the coming of spring in the northern hemisphere.

February has also become a time for romance and the expression of love with the modern celebrations associated with St Valentines day. This year the month certainly starts with a “feel good” boost as Venus the planet of love, attraction and beauty connects with Neptune in the sign of Pisces on February 1st. This combination gives a sense of well being in the area of relationships of all kinds. Any tension that has been ongoing during the past weeks, especially in close relationships, should experience a reprieve as the Neptune/Pisces influence encourages making those unions without the usual conditions or expectations about who we should, or shouldn’t, be for each other.

As the Moon becomes Full in Leo on the 3rd opposite the Sun in Aquarius they make a positive link to Uranus and the South node of the Moon. This Moon/Sun combination brings a bold statement and some welcome positive creative expression and the Uranus/Node connection adds the possibility of an unexpected chance to break out of past habits or situations for the better.

The Sun moves into line with the big planet Jupiter to form an opposition on the 6th. This yearly event puts Earth between the two creating a stressful energy combination in our solar system bringing strong weather patterns and additional volcanic activity. This year because Jupiter is closer than usual to earth it will be particularly bright in the night sky. Watch out for a good view as it rises in the East after Sunset and remains very visible all night.

The quicksilver planet Mercury has been slowed down by it’s apparent retrograde journey as it moves between earth and the Sun and resumes it’s forward motion, from earth’s perspective on the 11th. It should now be possible to resolve any communications, travel arrangements or transactions that were delayed, misplaced or problematic in the last few weeks.

A big feature of this months Astrology is the New Moon on the 18th. As the second New Moon in Aquarius this year it is unusual for that alone but it’s also falling on an especially potent degree on the very cusp of Aquarius and Pisces. Just a few seconds after the exact Sun Moon conjunction the Moon moves into Pisces followed a couple of minutes later by the Sun. This gives us the opportunity to focus on making a mental leap in our conscious understanding. Aquarius represents the wisdom of the unified, collective or divine mind. Using the potency of the New Moon as a “seed” moment we can attune to that level of knowledge to take us forward into the next phase as the Moon waxes to Full in the sign of Virgo next month.

If you still need to lift your spirits a little further a good view of Venus becoming brighter in the early evening sky just after sunset should help. Her beauty is enhanced by the first sliver of the crescent Moon as she moves into the assertive sign of Aries on 20th to pair up with Mars who entered Aries only hours earlier. Venus and Mars together are a passionate couple and Mars gets his way in his own sign, so expect some straightforward, unambiguous moves towards whatever is desired. The positive contact with Saturn during the last week of February will give a stabilising effect to these “love” planets so you can make the most of that feisty assertive energy without losing all common sense and natural caution.

This month the New Moon is at 29°59′ Aquarius on the 18th February at 11:48pm

January 2015 – Mars Conjunct Neptune & New Moon in Aquarius

celticdoorwayWe are just halfway through January and it’s been an eventful year already. The current planetary patterns speak of change and the need for renewal with the pressure on to move swiftly into our collective future. The recent Full Moon in Cancer was a potent force combined with the Sun Pluto conjunction whilst making a cross pattern with the lunar nodes. Those few days provided moments when the past and present seemed to collide.

Choices were made about which direction in life holds the most meaning now. Issues, events or a way of being that resulted from past actions came into full view and in the fresh light of an emerging new perspective it may have seemed tarnished, false or simply unacceptable to the “new you”!

Now as the pace of change continues through the second half of January and into February the focus is definitely future orientated and the critical question is – what part will you play in shaping it?

The New Moon mid month forms part of a rare event by falling in the very first degree of Aquarius. This allows for a second New Moon in Aquarius in February. With both the Sun and Moon having barely crossed the threshold of a sign when they coincide, the energy of that sign is significantly strengthened. Aquarius the water bearer, represents the inspired thoughts from the higher mind or collective consciousness. As an independent thinker the archetypal character of this sign is also highly civilised, humane and seeks to improve society for the good of all. These coming few weeks will show us where social structures, organisations, national and personal boundaries are in need of a radical review and restructuring to match with these altruistic ideals.

For some, attuning to this Moon phase can allow for a ‘stream of conciousness’ experience, visionary thinking or simply an unusually inclusive and sociable attitude. Expect an increased urge towards being true to one’s self and be prepared to step aside from the crowd if required. Standing up for truth and freedom are worthy aspirations but attaining them is not going to be straightforward. Knowing exactly what you are standing up for, or against, could become more complex and challenging than you had first imagined. The planetary dynamics occurring now mean it will be hard to tell what is truth and what is illusion or delusion.

Emphatic Mars combines with nebulous Neptune during this Moon phase whilst Mercury slows to a standstill before turning retrograde on the 21st. Trickery, deceit, or slight of hand may be intentional whilst misunderstandings may genuinely be the result of unreliable information. Whatever occurs now needs to be viewed with a cautious but open mind and many of the things you believed to be true about the world, other people and even yourself might need to be questioned. By being discerning during the next few weeks you may find many ideas and beliefs can be revised. You begin to get more information or see glimpses of the bigger picture. Remember that ‘enlightenment’ makes some previously desirable options look very unsuitable. But also be prepared to be surprised, inspired, amazed and delighted when you discover your ‘reality’ is not what it seemed.

December 2014 – Uranus Square Pluto finale, Saturn moves into Sagittarius & New Moon first degree of Capricorn!

astrologers pointingLook out – 2015 Forecast coming soon!

Observing the Sun’s path as it moves through our skies is an ancient occupation which connects us to fellow beings who lived in our distant past. Stone alignments and monuments throughout the world were positioned to calculate these important celestial movements. The changing seasons of the Solar year form the basis of our tropical zodiac, used in what we call “western” astrology. The Sun’s movements are tracked as it crosses the equator to reach the tropic of Cancer at it’s most northerly and the tropic of Capricorn at the most southerly point. These crossings provide us with the cardinal points and four cardinal Zodiac signs. In December we’re on the countdown to the Winter Solstice, when the Sun will have reached it’s most southerly position, poised to begin it’s return journey north. Here in the northern hemisphere the days begin to lengthen once again and we take time out of daily routines to celebrate and enjoy traditional midwinter festivals.

The first week of December brings a Full Moon in Mercury ruled Gemini. The Sun is currently in Sagittarius with Mercury close by but hidden in it’s light. The pair make a comfortable trine aspect with unpredictable Uranus which adds to the hectic feel of this Moon phase. Most likely it will give a sense of restlessness or scattered energy for a few days. This is a fast paced time of making connections, getting in touch with friends and neighbours, sending out all kinds of communications and of course, another Mercury ruled activity, shopping!

The major astrological events this month include the close connection of Uranus and Pluto in the difficult square angle that has been around, on and off, since 2012. Now they will travel within “orb” of each other until finally parting company in late March. This is a grand finale for the energy that has brought us revolution and regime change. Tensions will be high during these months but there are other supportive and constructive planetary alignments beginning to step in now as we finish this unsettling phase in our evolution.

After 26 years, slow Saturn is about to take another turn in Sagittarius beginning on 23rd December. This will bring a very different and more positive way to experience the lessons that the “Lord of Time” provides. Since October 2012 Saturn has been in Scorpio, a sign which is looking for transformation and will undergo a purging to eliminate whatever obstacles hinder that process. Recent years have tested our ability to draw from an instinctual nature whilst also acting appropriately as the evolved person we are becoming. Many hard lessons have been taught to us about what happens when base urges take the lead. Sagittarius is a very different beast and is always seeking to refine it’s nature through intelligent understanding. This is a time when our beliefs, philosophical attitudes and spiritual orientation will be put to the test. What stands up under severe scrutiny is probably worth keeping, everything else is questionable.

The Solstice on the 21st is followed by the New Moon in the first degree of Capricorn, the sign of the sea goat. This mythical creature represents our dual drive of instinct and emotion alongside our innate ambition to rise up and become an honourable and civilised human being. Make time to consider what you’ve learned and achieved lately, the hard won lessons are the most worthwhile. Reflect on what you truly value and on what has served you well over time. Use these insights to bolster and sustain you now before you turn your attention to the year ahead and any plans you may have for the future.

Astrology September 2014 Full Moon in Pisces conjunct Chiron

If last month you felt that for every step forward you had to take one, or several, steps back then you’ll be pleased to know that September brings a change of pace. Whilst the energetic and feisty Mars was under the constraints of a sober and moderate Saturn during the last few weeks every move was tempered, hindered or frustrated. Mars as the faster paced planet is pulling away from Saturn’s influence now and things that have been delayed or thwarted lately, begin to gain some momentum. The intense and sometimes obsessive Scorpio placement of Mars continues through until the 13th when the red planet moves into fast paced and forward looking Sagittarius. This shift could speed things up on every level, as personal and global scenarios that recently seemed impossibly difficult but compelling become “unstuck” Agendas that have been put on hold can now be redirected in a more flexible or positive way.

The early days of September can bring a sense of increasing emotional sensitivity and intuitive understanding as the Moon waxes to Full in watery Pisceswhere it also joins with Chiron, the wounded healer. During this last perigee Full Moon or “Super Moon” of the year the tides will be high and emotions will run deep. A Pisces Moon puts us in touch with our non physical senses and this super cognitive awareness can bring in additional information not usually available.

Combined with Chiron there could be a real opportunity to make sense of deep emotional scars that have kept us in fearful or limited situations for far too long. Healer Chiron helps us to make the leap between Saturn with his earthbound conditioning and Uranus which inspires us towards being our authentic self.

As the month progresses into the third week the small but powerful Pluto starts his forward motion once more on the 22nd. Planet of transformation through trial, Pluto brings the unseen, shadowy underworld into the light for purification. We can expect revelations to come from deep within our personal psychology or previously hidden information about global organisations to be exposed.

On the 23rd we have the Autumn Equinox as the Sun moves into Libra followed by the New Moon in Libra on the 24th. Whatever else is going on around us now, a strong focus on the Venus ruled sign of balance, equality and harmony brings our need for meaningful relationships to our attention and we’ll seek out significant people to have those important shared experiences with.

April 2014 Grand Cardinal Cross & Lunar Eclipse

eclipseseaThe recent New Moon in Aries on 30th March marked the beginning of this month’s Astrological action. We can watch the planetary movements working like a domino effect as one event leads into another and the drama unfolds.

Although there is a significant focus on the Cardinal cross during 20th -23rd April this configuration has been strongly in effect since January.

The year so far has been fairly intense, with chaos and disruption apparent to varying degrees in our personal lives as well as through global events and weather extremes.

There are currently several converging aspects in effect involving the planets of revolution, transformation, expansion and force. The Uranus Pluto square is about to connect for the sixth out of seven events that started back in 2012. Simultaneously, since last year, Jupiter in Cancer is opposite Pluto in Capricorn and square to Uranus in Aries. These Cardinal signs represent the beginning of a new cycle involving essential archetypes and their many levels of expression – the individualist person as Aries, the compassionate person as Cancer and the responsible person as Capricorn. When Mars moves into the vacant fourth position at 13 degrees he forms the cross to include the unselfish person as Libra.

This cross pattern is triggered repeatedly this month until it’s climax on 23rd. The Sun, now in Aries, a powerful position for the Sun echoing the theme of a new cycle, touches Jupiter through a square angle on 1st April, joins with Uranus on 2nd makes a square to Pluto on 3rd and opposes Mars on 8th. Each time the Cross pattern is activated we are edged a step further towards the fulfilment of it’s purpose.

The Full Moon on 15th is a total Lunar eclipse in signs Aries and Libra. At the same time fast moving Mercury, planet of the rational mind is joined with inspirational mind, Uranus and relentless Pluto is turning to retrograde motion. This suggests another impulse for change with new information emerging from external or internal sources to undermine the existing paradigm. Now it’s important to watch your thinking patterns and beware of any negativity which undermines your well being. Your personal response to people and circumstances around this time has a heightened significance and will set the trend for the near future. A Solar eclipse on 29th is a less powerful event occurring after the Grand Cross has culminated.

As we navigate our way through April it’s important to remember that everyone alive on the planet is also experiencing these planetary dynamics unfolding in some way, directly or indirectly. The underlying principle behind this Cardinal Cross is to instigate a new basis for living without the extreme polarity we’ve known. We have been accustomed to living in a world of divisions where we identify with others who share our gender, our family, generation, neighbourhood, nation, religion, political party, cultural background etc. Most of the world’s organisations, social systems, financial and government structures have been built using this “us and them”  foundation. Now as we move away from the previous paradigm the emphasis is on our being a unique individual whilst developing integrity, personal responsibility and an awareness of the part we play in an all inclusive group of one.

The intense energies this month will assist in removing everything that’s not structurally stable, fit for purpose or if it’s based on unsound ideology. Many people, as individuals, groups, governments or religions are still making decisions and taking action based on something which stems from these outmoded systems. This behaviour may appear crazy, irrational, delusional or insane to anyone observing from a different perspective.

If you want to know what to do – it’s quite simple – find, and maintain, your equilibrium, your inner peace. You may need to take action to achieve this and that could be just a few minutes walking, relaxing or meditating to re-centre your self or maybe it’s time to leave your relationship, home, job or relocate across the globe! Above all, not taking yourself too seriously will help you through anything which proves personally challenging.

The next Full Moon is at 25° Libra on the 15th April at 8:43am and the next New Moon is at 9° Taurus on the 29th at 7:15am

All change for March – Mars & Saturn go Retrograde -Venus moves into Capricorn & Jupiter goes Direct!

March is associated with the change of season. In the Northern hemisphere, regardless of the weather conditions, we can usually sense the energizing effect of the Sun as it reaches approaches the equinox position. Days become longer than nights from the 20th. Other significant energy shifts may be felt this month as the personal planets make crucial changes in their zodiac positions.

On 1st March Mars begins a retrograde phase which lasts through to mid May. This red planet rules over our physical energy. He is assertive, dynamic and competitive. Travelling through the relationship oriented sign, Libra, our energy has been directed towards “us and them” issues. Independent, feisty Mars is not very comfortable with kinship and co-operation so relationship focus tends towards differences rather than common ground. In backwards motion this attention becomes reflective and inward looking. Conflict becomes very personal and we have to look within for the cause of any strife. This is not a time to blame others for the discord.

On the 2nd Saturn, also turns retrograde. Traditionally associated with limitations in the mundane world he has a constraining and structuring effect. Whilst he’s slowed down to retrace his path we’re having to re-examine the fundamental underpinning to the very substance of our lives. In the sign of Scorpio, Saturn’s focus is on identifying and transforming whatever has power or control over us. It may be habits, addictions to food, drugs, lifestyle, psychological patterns, desires, phobias, insecurities etc. or less personal powers like environment, government, cultural beliefs, religious doctrines or national policies. Saturn in Scorpio asks awkward questions about forbidden topics. Whilst Saturn is retrograde until mid July question what it is within you that dictates your response. Once identified, transform your reactions so they no longer have power over your choices.

On the 5th Venus moves from conservative Capricorn into autonomous Aquarius. Venus is a social planet and draws us into relationships of all kinds and inspires us to create works of beauty. She’s been in Capricorn since mid December and the emphasis has been on practicalities, commitment and resilience. Venus plays it safe in Capricorn and will endure hardships for the sake stability. Associations or creative pursuits that have stood the test of time will prove to be of lasting value. Now the energy shifts towards more future looking Aquarius. A strong desire for freedom in all social connections will be uppermost with social equality and fair play being vital. Common interests draw people together and platonic relationships are as important as physical bonds. Standing apart gives a sense of independence rather that isolation now. Selfish desires are not easily tolerated.

On the 6th the big planet Jupiter changed direction to start moving forward once more. Known as the greater benefic Jupiter is exalted in it’s current sign of Cancer. Here the best of his nature is expressed. Jupiter increases the “feel good” things in life, opens up new horizons and exerts a sense of trust and faith in life. Now he’s moving freely in a direct motion and we can expect a boost of positivity and opportunity. He is also moving closer into the difficult T square alignment with Pluto and Uranus. This puts us on alert in preparation for the forthcoming Cardinal Cross in April. The increase in tension can be felt, but this can be an excited anticipation as much as an anxious dread. With Jupiter in Cancer we can know what we truly need in our lives and we are given the opportunity to reach out and find it, whilst what we don’t need in our life becomes more apparent and we can simply let it go.

Astrology of 2014 part two The Details

For an in depth overview of the major themes this year please read 2014 part one.

Note: This article appeared in the January edition of the West Cork People and some information from part one has been repeated in the first few paragraphs for clarification.

2014 – Through the Seasons

The New Moon on the morning of 1st January in the sign of Capricorn was conjunct the powerfully transformative Pluto. With most of the world’s population focussed on New Year resolutions and fresh starts, this introduction has really set a trend for the year ahead. Tuning in to the steady, organisational and practical skills of earthy Capricorn is helpful just to set you off on a steady and focused course during the challenging planetary dynamics of 2014. When Pluto gets involved with our lives he ensures that if change is required, it will happen. Sometimes we like the change and welcome it. Sometimes we resist it with every part of ourselves. Undergoing a painful operation or procedure can be the only way towards healing or greater freedom. Pluto has a job to do. Look where Capricorn falls in your own birth chart to know which area of life is getting some special attention this year. Expect to see the landscape change (metaphorically or literally) on every level during this year. In our physical external world and our metaphysical inner world there will be a noticeable move towards the new era that has been edging in over many years. In particular, our own thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and perspective will undergo a revolution over the next months.

2014 falls in the midst of a whole wave of planetary movements relevant to the massive change, upheaval, uncertainty and renewal that’s apparent around the globe. The major transits this year feature strong oppositions and square angles which bring conflict and confrontation between differing standpoints. On an outer level we’ll see this confrontational energy being manifest in every direction around the globe with war, extreme weather, anti- “something” protests, power struggles and opposition to just about everything. On an inner level we will be forced to confront ourselves and replace old beliefs with a new awareness.

Astrological hotspots will mean a particularly powerful year for some. If you were born during the first week of January, April, July or October or with significant personal planets in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, particularly if those planets are at 11-15 degrees you can expect this to be a momentous year. For those born during July or the first two weeks of August, this year is the high point in a 12 year cycle so you can watch out for welcome opportunities and be prepared to make some serious headway. The Fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius get a positive boost later in the year too.

For an in depth overview of the major themes this year please read 2014 part one.

Winter Solstice – Spring Equinox

Relationships of all kinds will be under the spotlight during the first quarter of 2014. Throughout January Venus is retrograde in Capricorn, so now you can take time to reconsider what is of lasting value. Midwinter festivities are over, life carries on and there are lean months to negotiate. This is especially felt whilst the Sun is in the Saturn ruled signs of Capricorn and Aquarius. More than other signs, Capricorn has a strong reputation for realism, sometimes called negativity, but pragmatism can be essential for physical survival. It’s the harsh realities of earthly limitations that confront us now. Stress is often felt wherever a change in approach or attitude is required.

Venus always brings relationships into focus and these early weeks will be a time to evaluate what’s worth pursuing or maintaining. It will highlight where there’s work to be done and effort required. But January is definitely not the time to make drastic major decisions or embark on a new romantic venture or pursuit. Use this month to review your inclinations but put off any action until after January 31st.

With Jupiter also retrograde until early March, issues of faith and belief will be tested. Going backwards through the sign of Cancer, the usually benevolent Jupiter, will highlight whatever is vulnerable or needing extra care and nurture in our lives. During late January until late February Jupiter makes a stressful angle with first Pluto and then Uranus as part of the build up to the Cardinal Cross of April. With Mercury also retrograde from the 6th to 28th February there is plenty of time to reflect on what has brought us to here. These months will demonstrate where an overly optimistic viewpoint has prevented people from facing up to a situation that is no longer sustainable. With Mars retrograde in Libra from March 1st until mid May there could be a sense of frustration as any forward movement is thwarted. During this time if sheer optimism or positivity has not improved a situation then it’s a sign to cast it off altogether and free up your energy for something new. At the spring equinox, as the Sun moves into Aries to start a new cycle on 20th March the energy builds in intensity as the planets move closer to form a Cardinal cross pattern.

Spring Equinox – Summer Solstice

The second quarter of 2014 holds some of the most significant astrological events of the year. Saturn in Scorpio is retrograde throughout this period whilst Mars maintains it’s retrograde in Libra until mid May. This is not the time to push forward on anything major. Allow whatever comes up for your attention to have significance but any assertive effort will almost certainly backfire on you or at least fizzle out as a non-event. There are still lessons to be learned from what occurred during the past few years and attempts to build up something new now is lacking the benefit of full hindsight. Endurance and patience are required. The best approach is to slow down, take it easy, and if you have any doubts, don’t do it.

Just hours after Pluto turns retrograde the first Lunar eclipse of the year occurs on 15th April with a Solar eclipse on 29th. During 20th – 23rd, Pluto, Uranus, Jupiter and Mars form a cross in the Cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.

The signature for this formation is freedom of the individual against the control of the state. Similar themes such as the autonomy of local economic systems against homogeneous global corporations will be apparent. On an international level expect this period to spark major events of revolution and rebellion.

A similar T-Square involving Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto during 1648 marked the English Civil War, which saw the demise of King Charles I and Cromwell’s rise. The same dynamic occurred during1793, at the height of the French Revolution.

The stress of the Grand Cross lingers through to early May during which time we have a Solar Eclipse in Taurus on 29th April. An eclipse works as a trigger point for themes which play out in the months to come. By mid May the recent intensity will ease as Mars starts his forward motion once more. Finally some positive progress can be made and this is supported by Jupiter as it makes a welcome trine angle to Saturn. Although this is not a complete turn around it does brings a sense of new optimism blended with practical solutions to implement the required next steps. Over the following weeks the mood is towards much soul searching and reaching for something meaningful from within. Mercury in reflective Cancer turns to retrograde on 7th June and Neptune, the planet of spirituality in otherworldly Pisces, turns retrograde on 9th June until mid November.

Assertive Mars, in people orientated Libra, is now making up for lost time when he makes another difficult square to Pluto in mid June. Expect a show of force as intentions are made clear. An agenda for action by some may well be in conflict with others who continue to hold on to control.

Summer Solstice to Autumn Equinox

On June 21st the Sun moves into Cancer marking the summer solstice. Having come through the difficult first half of the year we should now be well aware that situations and circumstances will not be returning to how they were in past years. We have passed through a point of no return. The disruption is still ongoing but it’s not neccessarily all disaster and destruction. Making positive changes and establishing patterns that contribute to a new way of being takes courage and a willingness to move beyond the comfort zone.

With Mars currently in Libra our drive is towards social relationships. On 25th June Mars opposes unpredictable Uranus in forthright Aries and this could bring more breaks than unions. This brings ongoing conflicts to a head once more as the urge to move away from restrictive situations is given another boost. When Mercury, in it’s own sign of Gemini, begins a forward motion again on July 1st it may be possible to open up some fresh dialogue or negotiations during the next few weeks. On July 16th the great benefic, Jupiter leaves sensitive Cancer and moves in to regal Leo where he stays for the next year. This move into Leo often coincides with a significant slump in the stock market though it also brings a period of increased opportunities and lucky breaks for the fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. This shift will also mark a point when the general trend is towards big and bold statements. When things happen it will be in a big or dramatic way. It’s also possible that those who are more confidant or have a greater sense of their personal power may outshine the “lesser mortals” in a race to the top. By mid July Saturn will begin forward progress once more to travel through the last half of Scorpio. Progress can now be made as the dark secrets and subversive behaviour of our governments or others in authority will be out in the public view whilst any attempts to assert manipulative controls will become obvious.

Uranus turns retrograde on 22nd July and Mars moves into it’s own sign, Scorpio on 26th. Mars goes on to make another challenging aspect to Jupiter and a supportive trine to Neptune in early August. Travelling at quite a pace Mars moves swiftly through to Sagittarius by 13th September. As it moves through each sign it brings an assertive energy. This can be helpful for anyone with a Scorpio or Sagittarius Sun if they want to tackle something difficult or challenging. Though it can also make them seem overbearing or argumentative if you are their obstacle!

Pluto turns to go forward on 22nd September bringing the focus away from inner personal transformation. Fundamental shifts have taken place and now the outer world will need to adapt to reflect a new perspective.

Autumn Equinox to Winter Solstice

The Sun passes into Libra to mark the Autumn equinox on the 23rd September and the nights lengthen into winter. The challenging stresses of the spring and early summer have taken their toll and we still have some way to go. The final quarter of 2014 starts with a positive powerful aspect between two giants in fire signs. Expansive Jupiter in Leo is trine a future orientated Uranus in Aries. Expect some uplifting developments or sudden revelations to offer welcome changes. Inventors or visionaries may come to the fore with ideas that will benefit us all. Whilst Mercury travels retrograde, from Libra back into Scorpio again, between 4th – 25th October we have a Grand Fire Trine formation and two eclipses. Between 5th – 8th October Mars, in the sign of the seeker Sagittarius, moves into position along with freedom loving Jupiter and Uranus to form a triangular dynamic. This Grand Trine is one of the most powerful and positive patterns and not only the fire signs will benefit. The Lunar eclipse Moon joins with Uranus in Aries on 8th whilst the Sun in Libra, at the same degree of the earlier Grand Cross, is flanked by beneficial Venus and the North node to form the apex of a kite pattern. How good can it get? This configuration speaks of invention, inspiration, expansion, motivation, revelation, great spiritual heights, positive social values and also brings in a sense of our collective destiny. Use these days to tune into some very special cosmic vibes.

A culmination of the tense Pluto/Uranus energies occurs when Mars joins with Pluto in early November. This could be expressed as a sudden release of power on a global level or a cosmic kick to old negative habits on a personal level.

The closing weeks of the year bring us the sixth of the seven squares between Uranus and Pluto on 15th December and further events along the same theme, breaking free from control, limitation and oppression are likely as we approach the winter Solstice on the 21st December.

As the year ends we will recognise that our world has changed since 2014 started. As individuals we will have changed too. Thoughts, beliefs, values, have all gone through some transformation and by the time we welcome in 2015 each of us may have lost something familiar but will have gained something of great value for the new era we are moving into.

Astrology of 2014 part one The Overview

For a detailed look at the year ahead through the seasons read part two

New Years day 2014 is an auspicious time to make your resolutions . The New Moon on the morning of 1st January is in the sign of Capricorn, the determined and renowned strategist, which couldn’t be better for setting out with clear intentions. Getting off on the right foot might be an essential move with some fairly challenging astrological dynamics to be negotiated in the coming months.

Astrological hotspots will be mean a particularly powerful year for some.

The exciting news is that during this current epoch we have the opportunity for a very different experience.

By looking more closely at each of the planets playing a significant role we can build up a picture of the year ahead. There are some strong underlying themes that will be affecting us all during 2014.

When our attention is fully engaged by various quarrels, either watching it on the global news or as personal experiences in our work or family life, there’s no room for simple acts of care and respect. Eventually at least one of the opposing sides in a dispute will get weary of the constant battle. At that moment there is finally the opportunity for real change, but it usually requires total exhaustion from the prolonged stress of relentless conflict to bring it about. For the sake of peace and a relief from age old struggles there is finally an acknowledgment of the others right to hold a differing viewpoint. This year has the potential to set us firmly on a new path.

Pluto in Capricorn 2008 – 2023

The small but powerful planet Pluto moved into Capricorn during 2008 and remains there until 2023. It takes Pluto about 245 years to return to a zodiac sign and during each of it’s previous visits to Capricorn we’ve seen the rise and fall of great nations. During these years we will witness the destruction and replacement of structures that have outlived their time and usefulness. A complete restructuring of economic systems, methods of government, and religious organisations will be instigated with ruthless pragmatism. Concepts of control and power will undergo radical transformation. Pluto is associated with deep and fundamental changes in our collective and personal psyche. Each of us holds a store of information on an unconscious level. This is made up of social, cultural, emotional and environmental conditioning, patterns of thought and behaviour laid down without any conscious knowledge. Pluto, working on the collective “unconscious” will bring these patterns into view as thoughts and beliefs played out as events in our daily lives. Here we can see them in action and choose to accept them as justifiable, or alternatively, question their validity, especially when these thoughts and beliefs are the cause of suffering to ourselves or others.

Uranus in Aries 2010 to 2019

Uranus, with it’s eccentric orbit is known to bring unexpected deviations and unpredictable outcomes. Transits can trigger the urge for individual freedom, bringing rebellion, revolution and reform. In the warrior sign of Aries, people are courageous and will stand-up or fight for what they believe to be right. Aries, as the first sign in the zodiac, represents the individual before there is any relationship to possessions, status or other people. Aries is about asserting the unattached and willful self. The archetypal Warrior cannot afford to pause for consideration of the consequences or outcomes of their actions. We’ve witnessed throughout the history of the world that when this is force is expressed as righteousness it often results in religious and political fanaticism or extremism.
Stressful planetary contacts to Uranus also trigger financial depressions and sudden stock markets crashes. Over these years we will see the abrupt downfall of governments and revolt against oppressive authority.
When Uranus was last in Aries during 1927 -1935 we not only saw a rise in fascism, world war and economic collapse but also many positive new ways of thinking, technical breakthroughs, inventions and a social reforms.

The energy of Uranus brings us out of our comfort zone, it can be an unpleasant jolt or a mind numbing shock but it’s always a wake up call! “Waking Up” has become the catch phrase of the decade and many people on the planet can now really feel the effect of this process as it rallies us to shake off any mental emotional or spiritual inertia. It can be experienced like slowly waking from a dream or being wrenched suddenly from a slumber. Whatever way it occurs, a new perception of reality is emerging on the planet. We are all being woken up to realise something about who or what we are and our true nature and relationship to this world and each other.

Uranus square Pluto 2012 to 2015

These mighty and powerful planets in this stressful combination are capable of implementing massive change. This compelling force is experienced individually through the events of daily life whilst it also affects the entire population of the world. Historically the square aspect between these planets has coincided with economic collapse and the most recent previous event was when Uranus was in Aries and Pluto was in Cancer during the 1930s, bringing both the Great Depression and the rise of fascism in Europe. We are likely to see some of the most challenging effects of this transit culminating in 2014 as the square aspect occurs during both April and December in combination with other potent planetary formations. This creates many “make or break” scenarios as we have to acknowledge that we can’t go back to how things were. Things brought out into the open in recent years cannot be ignored or understated simply for the sake of keeping a reassuring status quo. Having been shocked, awoken and enlightened to the true state of things, only the very determined can keep their heads buried in the comfort of familiar distractions. On the positive side, this aspect brings welcome regeneration and exciting breakthroughs. We can expect accelerated technological advances as well as radically new ways of thinking and mass shifts in consciousness to emerge over the next few years. Awareness can sometimes be unpleasant at first as we have to release the old understanding to adjust to a new perspective. But once the realisation has fully formed there is an uplifting sense of relief and freedom that comes into existence. This is especially possible during Pluto’s retrograde phase mid April to late September.

Jupiter opposite Pluto 2013 -2014

This antagonistic aspect began during July-August 2013 and continues from December 2013 through to May 2014. Jupiter is generally known to be the “feel good” planet bringing us the “new and improved” version of whatever it connects with. These characteristic qualities are expressed through expansion. When Jupiter comes into a stressful angle with a difficult planet such as Pluto it can amplify or exaggerate deeply held beliefs and unconscious behaviour. National, political, religious, ideological differences are likely to be enforced. Cultural prejudices may escalate. Beliefs that previously seemed unquestionable may be completely undermined as they no longer stand up under close scrutiny. This time period brings several of the current astrological themes to a peak. Here is an opportunity to walk away from restricting ideologies, inherited social conventions or a world view which is no longer relevant. Jupiter as a benevolent guide is at it’s most honorable in the sign of Cancer and seeks to express greater truth, freedom and integrity. As we are touched by this energy dynamic it becomes apparent where in our lives any unconscious thoughts prevent those more liberating qualities being uppermost.

Jupiter square Uranus February – May

From mid February through to early May the massive planet Jupiter moves into an uncomfortable angle to erratic Uranus completing the line up for the impending Grand Cross in April. These are both future orientated planets neither of which are content with the status quo and have little regard for well made plans or time tested methods. Jupiter’s association with faith and beliefs stirred up by an offbeat Uranus in headstrong Aries, can produce an outburst of irrational concepts with a determination to defend them regardless of their lack of integrity. On the inner level this can bring timely insight into areas where we limit ourselves unnecessarily. For those who are ready to accept new possibilities, perspectives or a way of being, this can mean the beginning of living life without the need for control or reliance on external factors for their well being.

Mars Retrograde March – May

Once every two years Mars makes an apparent backward motion known as a retrograde. During this time the normal dynamic energy of action orientated Mars is impeded so we can’t expect things to run at the regular tempo. The usual character of Mars is to activate and to accelerate so during this phase it’s best not to initiate anything of significance as there isn’t the vitality required to keep the momentum going to fulfillment. There may be a sense of impatience or frustration as the forward thrusting energy slows down to a crawling pace. Those that do push ahead will be disappointed, whether in war, legal cases, political reforms or love affairs. The desired outcome never materialises. With Mars in the Cardinal sign of Libra the emphasis is on social situations between equals. This could be relationships between lovers as well as business partnerships or any area of life that demands co-operation, consideration, diplomacy and compromise. The retrograde period is best utilised for planning, negotiating arrangements and inward contemplation of any issues that may be highlighted during the intense Cardinal Cross in April.

The Grand Square and Cardinal Cross April 2014

April is an exceptionally busy month in the Astrologers calendar this year. It brings together all the major trends of the current era in one full blast. Just hours after Pluto turns retrograde on 14th the first Lunar eclipse of the year occurs on 15th with a Solar eclipse on 29th . On the 20th – 23rd, Pluto, Uranus, Jupiter and Mars form a cross in the cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. This is a culmination in a series of square patterns that started when Jupiter moved into Cancer during August 2013. With three planets already in place, events are triggered when the fourth planet moves to occupy the empty space in the cross formation. Mars as the timekeeper, fulfills this when all four planets will be at exactly 13-14 degrees of their signs. Personal or international events with the same theme will be highlighted again in mid December when Pluto and Uranus repeat the Square aspect once more.

Pluto in it’s retrograde motion during this formation puts the emphasis on inward reflection with a strong ability to transform and regenerate. With the harsh tension held in the square aspects, expect this pivotal period to bring crisis in some form. The true meaning of crisis is a turning point or juncture and this astrological dynamic brings us to a metaphorical and possibly, a literal crossroads.
Cardinal signs are especially powerful for initiating new ventures and pioneering ideas. This combination of astrological forces suggest a time when a radical change in our consciousness, perception and awareness occurs.

Beyond belief – What’s true for you in 2014

The perhaps strange and radical idea that we really don’t need to change anything, even ourselves, is one of the hot spiritual topics that will become a signature of this year. The change that is due to occur is in what we believe about the world, each other and ourselves. The actual changes that need to occur can then get on with it – soon we will be living our lives according to what actually is true, reality rather than an idea, and we will all be a lot happier as a result! This year brings us the opportunity to find out what’s real and what is simply a belief about what’s real.

The current upheaval in the world largely exists because the majority of people on the planet, whether rich or poor, are in a state of inner turmoil, unhappy and, or, want to do something to change their condition.
Inner tension, lack of clarity, confusion and unhappiness occurs when we don’t like what we see or experience. We don’t like it, so we want to change it. Problems occur because that change usually means either changing someone else, or life circumstances, to fit with our own idea of how it should be. Most of us interpret life events and situations in-line with our personal, national or cultural world view, or to uphold what we “know” to be true. We are always looking for everyone, and life itself, to agree with us so we can know we are right and therefore safe. If what we see doesn’t fit with what we approve of or consider to be right, we dislike it and generally anything that opposes our belief is regarded as a threat. The current events of disruption, conflict, social breakdown, economic collapse, excessive controls, restriction of personal freedoms etc. will continue as long as there is someone, or the actions of a group of people, who believe themselves to be right, and by necessity, believe someone else to be wrong.

Becoming aware that being right doesn’t have to make others wrong, whilst realising that if we stop trying to change things to fit our personal idea of how things should be there’s a good chance things could actually all turn out alright without our interference. In doing this we have the chance to awaken to a new possibility and a new way of being in the world. This is potentially the most momentous shift in human consciousness to occur in aeons.

By fully utilising this year’s provocative planetary energy to confront ourselves, rather than everyone else, we can challenge personal beliefs, thoughts and desires to see if they represent what is really true for us each as an individual. Simply following habitual opinions, behaviours or attitudes handed down through social, cultural or political systems is no longer an option. This is a pivotal year which may demand some sincere personal inquiry. Each of us can choose how to move forward from here.
